info NOTES:     - This mission should be played without "upgraded" texture and object packs. Doing so is an injustice to the integrity of the game, and may introduce issues not present in the original version.
- There are substantial differences between the difficulty levels.
- You might climb out of the level boundaries. You will recognise when. This probably won't break things, but it might get you stuck. You have been warned.
- You may want to keep around a rope arrow or two.
- The mission archive includes a high-resolution map suitable for printing, as well as a folder with concept sketches (some from way back in 2010 - this mission has been a long time in the planning!)
- Do a hard save before you ring the bells. When you do, you will have some time for action. Use that time wisely.

* Known Bugs *

- Knocking out your target should fail the mission, but this does not work reliably. Do a manual reload if he is incapacitated.
- A few sound issues due to terrain complexity. Hopefully nothing serious.
- Some odd AI behaviour due to the complexity of the mission, too.
- You may notice your arrows stop working. A reload tends to fix this problem.

Briefing

Welcome back, old friend! Do you still dare call yourself a master thief,
or are the rumours true that you have lost your edge?

No matter! The news I have for you should quicken the heartbeat of any
taffer who knows his stuff. 'Tis about none other but the Golden Books,
lost all these years to secrecy and forgetfulness! Aye, and now that the
veils have lifted just this little, the hands are already there to grab at
the bounty, or, like your former pals would prefer, make it sink back into
its former obscurity... A king's ransom! One of the books alone would be a
princely prize, and many would kill just for a part of it in these hard
times. Even the honest will be tempted when they get wind of its existence,
and where are the virtuous in this city to temper their greed?

As you can surmise, my interest in this affair is far from antiquarian.
I will claim half of the bounty when we obtain it. Remember: I know you well,
but you do not know me. And I know a few crucial pieces of information required
to reach our target that I am not inclined to share. If the deal is off, or
you try cross me, you shall never lay your hands on the Books.

Now for our deal. This night, a certain person will apparently obtain a
certain clue that leads to the Golden Books. Once I learn of the proper
circumstances, I will outline the proposal more precisely in a message, one that
you will find at Rose Garden, in the heart of Southern Hightowne. You should
know the place well: an old lovers' and thieves' hangout, and a place of many
meetings and clandestine arrangements. Your message will be waiting on the third
floor, last door at the end of the corridor. As for the ward's rotting palaces and
locked stores, you know the score: they are yours to plunder - as long as you
can get away with it.

story felt a bit loose

this fan mission is difficult because some areas can only be entered by climbing up the roofs. mantle and rope arrows are very important to get on top. the purpose is to meet client in the rose garden. unfortunately the only drawback of this fan mission is the story which unclear the reason Bernalt dead and the killer is unknown.

I would not call Rose Garden "the best fan mission for Thief games ever made", but it certainly keeps me hooked during several hours each time I replay it. Striking vertical brushwork with a great sense of scale and depth. The city feels large, tall and foreboding. It's great to look up and see just how tall everything is and then notice an open window or two for loot. Nice amount of grappling/jumping around. Lighting is decent.

Rose Garden is, hands down, the best FM I've ever played. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this flawless city mission, it does everything incredibly right.
