Whispers in the Desert just works really well. It's far from groundbreaking. It's a tomb raid, not particularly big or tense. It's filled with cool traps, however, complimented by a unique and exotic location that's rarely visited in Thief.
"T2X"s Zaya hails from a land in the south, arriving in the City by boat. Nicked's "Sturmdrang Peak" mentions the Ancient Southlands, a location which very well may be Zaya's land of origin. In Whispers, we finally visit this southern land. The Southlands carry an Egyptian aesthetic, which is so cool and novel as an all-new locale for Garrett to explore. This tomb screams Egyptian. That, along with near-perfect gameplay, makes for a worthy mission to sink your teeth into.

I started this mission a while back but gave up fairly quickly as I'm not a big fan of undead.
After reading your review, I decided to give it another go and I'm very pleased that I did!
Firstly, I found that the mummies were reasonably easy to evade and secondly, without having to resort to getting hints off TTLG / YouTube I managed to complete the mission on expert (bar 200 ish loot and two of the "secrets").
I really like missions that have puzzles which are difficult but not impossible.
Indiana Jones meets Garrett.
