Legacy of Knoss is another "city mission". Since these missions have been getting better and better throughout the years, I don't mind that whatsoever. City missions have gone a long way since "Assassins" from the first official Thief game. The city section of "Assassins" was quite boring, and even Thief II's city highlight "Life of the Party" felt limited to me compared to the huge, sprawling interiors the series provided.
But I digress. Legacy of Knoss is ambitious, huge, and spectacular. The limited nature of official city missions is nowhere to be noticed. There are many interiors to enter, which are connected to each other and the outside space through varied and creative means. Even the first mission of "Catacombs of Knoss" does not match the scope this mission operates on.
Gameplay-wise, this means there's a lot to explore, and many ways to traverse the level. More ways to enter buildings, or to escape from guards, is always a huge plus. Being chased by guards and finding a new passageway to barely jump through is always exciting and feels tense. The atmosphere is strong, and gets even stronger for reasons I won't spoil.
The story is cool as well. Executed well, but not groundbreaking. A sequel to "Catacombs of Knoss", Garrett brings the Grimoire of Knoss to an antique shop owner. This is only the beginning of a wild adventure that leads you to the deepest parts of the city.
The end part is a little jankier to play than the rest, but since it lasts short and doesn't overstay its welcome, that's fine. It makes up for it. This entire mission is chock-full of discoveries, so get going!
Oh, but play Catacombs first.
