Premise of The Death of Garrett is simple: your partner - simply named Bok - betrayed you and left you dying in some cave complex. Your task is to get out and bring revenge upon Bok's head. That's all what you need to know right now.
The mission itself is divided into two main parts - the caves and the mansion. It's not big (you can finish it in one hour), but the gameplay here is very challenging. It must be said that Chris Patterson tried to squeeze as much as possible from typical ways of creating tension while not resorting to dirt cheating. His approach I can describe as minimalistic but honest. While in caves you will encounter exploding frogs and - since you haven't any ranged weapons - you will be forced to improvise with finding alternative paths or kill frogs in a different ways. The mansion has lots of tile floor and it is advised to walk slowly and avoid being detected. There are lots of light sources here and not much water arrows so you must be precise and tactical here as well as in caves.
Perhaps, assassination objective is not what you can expect from Thief mission - even though Garrett depicted in original games is not only skilled but can be very harsh at times when needed. Also mission sometimes is a bit boxy. But in the end I didn't feel myself cheated and - unlike most of earlier missions - Death of Garrett didn't seem unfinished or too quick. Yet it does not drag too long. In my subjective rating of missions of 1999 year (the 1st year of Thief FMs) it takes 3rd place, right after Autumn in Lampfire Hills (1st place) and Bloodstone Prison (2nd place). What distinguish it from some other missions from the same era is that it still plays fresh.
