Behind Closed Doors is a city mission which feels somewhat distinct from the others I have played, especially regarding aesthetics. The city district portrayed here feels remarkably modern: Guards are smoking cigarettes, barbed wire lines certain walls and rooftops. This City feels like a City that has moved on from the entrapments of the oppressive Dark and Metal Ages, pursuing something more casual. Regardless, the atmosphere of this mission is thick and heavy, just... different.
The gameplay is mostly very satisfying. There's a lot to see here. You're even given some "side quests" by NPCs living here. There's a lot of rooftop navigation (rooftops even have their own footstep sounds now), and many windows to enter from up there. Buildings interconnect neatly, adding to a complex sense of navigation and exploration. The interiors, though often not fully explorable, contain a lot of details and uniquely constructed assets that add life to every location you visit.
There isn't really a single story here. Rather, the lives of citizens become their own tapestry into which a story is weaved. Many threads intermingle or separate to form their own plot line. They form the basis for your objectives, which evolve as you traverse this level. The best part is that, no matter how many threads you follow, they all fall into place eventually. There's an optional big riddle which had me look up some parts of its progression, but it was still satisfying to unravel its mystery.
My only genuine issue lies with a specific step involving the wax impression of a key. To me, it was not very clear what you have to do with it. Aside from that, this is a great mission. This is the first time I wish I could give a not-rounded score. An 8.5 would be perfect here. I preferred Legacy of Knoss - that mission simply did map design even better. Behind Closed Doors is no slouch either, though. It provides a player with very different vibes, which are very much worth experiencing.
