Been a while since I played the original and I won't compare the two in detail. It's largely the same mission, yet the biggest change is the protagonist. It's not Garrett. And I think it's in favor of this rather unusual attempt. There are some other changes, like extra locations that I don't remember seeing in the original.
Between the two versions, I don't think one is substantially better than the other. In case you're considering to play it (and you probably should), either will do.
