This is the first Thief mission I've played that felt more like a genuine horror experience, rather than just having scary enemies and a dreadful atmosphere. Part of that is because of a really cool lantern mechanic, which allows you to give light to surrounding areas. In return, you become just as visible for the enemies. Another part that contributes to the horror aspect is simply the setpieces and how you traverse them, and how it makes you confront enemies in a certain way.
I put the game down for a while because of the horror. I went to watch a walkthrough of the mission, which ended up making me feel safer about its contents (knowing what's gonna happen). And honestly, it convinced me that I shouldn't pass up on such a good mission.
Death's Turbid Veil plays like a shorter and scarier version of Ominous Bequest, somewhat. Ominous Bequest is famous for its puzzle-oriented progression (finding items, not always knowing what to do with them along with genuine riddles to solve). I feel like the "finding items" part is somewhat less well executed here. In Bequest, you were finding things left and right and it ensured you felt like you were progressing at a steady pace. Here, it feels the same until you end up at a part where you have to gather ingredients for a potion. I'll just say: pick up anything you see and pay constant attention to the little things. If not, you may have to scour the mansion and its surroundings for random items just laying about. I think Bequest gave a more streamlined experience with this. Important items were much easier to notice and didn't really need to go together to solve one single portion.
The rest of the mission is an absolute blast, however. Many of the puzzles (and much of the item hunting) work really well - I had my boyfriend solve the piano puzzle because I have no idea about these kinds of keys. The story and mystery are enthralling, the atmosphere is unparalleled (but not for people who dislike outright horror) and the ending is really cool. The loot count felt a bit steep, but I may have accidentally skipped things when replaying the first portion upon retrying the mission.
Absolutely worth a play, except for the faint of heart.
