This was very enjoyable to explore. A relatively compact but vertical city section bisected by a river, with plenty of little houses to break into, and a big mansion as the main attraction. The city is mostly kept in Thief Gold style, in the way skacky usually interprets it - grimy streets with tall buildings. The mansion, however, uses mostly Thief 2 textures and feels a lot brighter and more modern. The FM is set between T1 and T2, Truart has just become sheriff and the Mechanists are still doing construction work on Angelwatch. This more polished-looking mansion in a gloomy city district perfectly illustrates the changing times, and serves as a perfect transitional image between T1 and T2.
The atmosphere here was tremendous, so many beautifully designed areas, very inspiring. Gameplay is classic city & mansion fare with climbing up ledges, using rope arrows to get even higher, accessing locked homes through the windows (and finding the front door key inside), tried and true. This mission surprises with a few Black Parade elements like guard dogs, which are always fun to encounter. I hope the dogs get used by authors!
The writing was top notch too, I wager most readables were done by Prinxellier whose deliberately antiquated and bureaucratic style lends a lot of realism to the writing. All the public leaflets, legal treatises etc make the world feel real and lived in.
Lots of verticality in this one, staggering heights as usual when these two authors are involved, and the main mansion with its very different style to the rest of the architecture adds some nice fresh air to the usual skacky city mission. Highly recommended!
