This is the perfect example of what a fan mission should be. First and foremost, I didn't encounter any bugs or problems with playing the mission as intended. That should be objective number 1 for all missions.
But this one went so far beyond that. Instead of listing problems I ran into and shortcuts the authors made, for this mission, I get to list some of the neat touches that made this mission so much fun to play.
The plot was good. Readables were all spot on to help solve the map and also explain why you are solving the map. Design was good. It doesn't have to be excellent when everything gels together.
Throwing rocks at frogs is fantastic!
toilet paper that is actual paper... gross!
Using rocks to bash open a boarded up passage!
Glass windows that work as windows should.
changing objectives mid mission.
I normally hate missions that take all of your gear away. This one made it satisfying to get my gear back and had an actual plot to go with it
light switches with NPC's that notice
easter eggs
change of physics in a place where it actually makes sense to do that.
statues with voice buttons to play audio like in a museum.
When taking score into account, remember that some reviews are comparing original Thief 1 missions to Thief 2 missions that have been created 26 years later by teams of people. While fair in some respects, this mission includes things not found in the original game... like light switches, etc. Not only was it creating atmosphere that the devs hadn't accomplished, it was pioneering for others to follow.
I'm giving this a 10 because it completely accomplished what the author set out to do and there was no disconnect with the audience. Sure there are 10 mission campaigns that might have more eye candy, but at the end of the day, we need some shorter, simpler, single missions that still execute on a fun level, and this one did that phenomenally. It remains one of my favorites.
