Ducal/Hammer Asylum is a small demo for Thief: The Dark Project, made by Sperry (here known as Red Rogue) and his brother Asymuth. There seems to be confusion around the release date - one source claims January 2000, another May 2000. This demo is also sometimes confused with another experimental map from Sperry and Asymuth called Virtual Asylum. Setting these considerations aside, let's examine the mission itself.
The vaguely described plot is largely irrelevant: mysterious disappearances occur in Hammer Asylum, needing investigation and the elimination of a high priest. The level has a slightly surreal atmosphere, partly due to its incomplete state and partly because of concepts Sperry would later develop in his best works like Tears of Blood and Brainchild. As far as I know, this is the second or third daylight mission ever made (the first being the Circle of Strain duology from 1999).
The demo feels like a fever dream. Disconnected, bugged, or unfinished elements create a sensation of being suspended between states. For example, a priest utters words that don't belong in the context of the mission. No ambient sound except birdsong. A teleport trap transports every AI in the mission to one spot. Why? Nobody knows. Badly written readables hint at something larger but never developed. Simple, but interesting brushwork.
I recommend playing this mission precisely because of how strange it feels and plays. Its incomplete state and technical oddities combine into an experience that's fascinating in its own right.
Rating: 6/10 - Not polished or conventionally successful, but worth experiencing as a peculiar artefact from the early era of FMs.
